DetoxificationFunctional MedicineAbout me
Dr. Matthew Flory is the founder of Functional Health Team, which proudly provides, as he states, “the leading programs in CAUSE-based health care and healing lifestyle support,” currently for clients in 17+ states and growing rapidly. Functional Health Team provides a cutting-edge combination of convenient and private home-based consultation and Functional Medicine Health Coaching Team services and support.
For over 20 years Dr. Flory has supported clients maintaining a sharp focus on identifying the CAUSES of their health concerns and honing their treatment protocols for longstanding effectiveness.
His message is that Inflammation is now heralded as the common component or a unifier in all chronic disease by the likes of Harvard Medical School and multiple peer-reviewed journals. [1, 2, 3, 4] Dr. Flory has developed methods of evaluation, treatment and support focused on identifying and reducing, or eliminating when possible, the CAUSES OF INFLAMMATION. This is in stark contrast to traditional medical care which focuses pharmaceutical treatment on the symptomatic expression of a diagnosis. By adopting this philosophy, Dr. Flory treats health conditions at the root of the problem, rather than merely chasing the results of inflammation.
It is because of this approach that natural methods, nutritional remedies and lifestyle modifications can be implemented in an extremely effective way. These are treatment options that offer safe, effective and clinically-proven ways of regaining health, function and quality of life.
As a doctor practicing Functional Medicine, Dr. Flory specializes in, and truly enjoys, holistically treating inflammation and inflammation-related complaints because of the profound improvement his patients experience in their conditions. Previously these conditions were often treated through standard medical protocols with limited success. By utilizing Functional Medicine’s unique diagnostic procedures and largely natural treatment methods, with a focus on the cutting edge sciences of the Gut Microbiome, Immune System, Methylation and Nutrigenomics, Dr. Flory and his Team are the ‘Health Detectives’ you’ve been seeking.
“Functional Medicine addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms. Functional Medicine practitioners spend time with their patients, listening to their histories and looking at the interactions among genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that can influence long-term health and complex, chronic disease. In this way, Functional Medicine supports the unique expression of health and vitality for each individual.” – The Institute for Functional Medicine

Outside of his professional engagements, Dr. Flory really loves to express “right-sided brain” activities. He is a “weekend warrior” musician and enjoys occasionally traveling the US playing folk, bluegrass, jazz and blues music, and engaging audiences.
Dr. Flory was born and raised in Indiana. He had an early love for music, playing piano for 7 years and then engaging in orchestra, marching and jazz bands.
He enjoys playing tennis and in his teens played with his high school team going to the IN State Finals both as a team and individually. Outside of high school athletics, Dr. Flory reached a 6-state regional ranking of #1 in Boy’s Doubles and held the position for nearly 2 years. This all culminated in his inclusion in an athlete exchange program in which he spent a month abroad “down-under” on a trip for 2 weeks in Australia and 2 weeks in New Zealand. This initiated a new affinity for travel and engaging with other cultures for the aspiring doctor and healthcare industry leader.
His love for travel doesn’t stop there. He was bestowed with the blessing of a deeply rewarding relationship with the woman of his dreams in early 2017 and they are fascinated with exploring the world together as they each were in their individual lives.
Often you’ll find Dr. Flory traveling to California where his family now lives. His mother, Barbara, is recently retired from a long and influential career in education beginning as a teacher first engaging in remedial instruction and progressing to supporting gifted high-level student thinkers as they prepared for entering the world of graduate-level education. She received her Doctorate degree in Education and completed her career as not only a professional level educator, but also as director of a campus of Azusa Pacific University in Southern California. Dr. Flory’s father, Alan, not only contributed to his son’s passion for tennis, as he was a tennis coach for decades helping to coach his son, but also contributed by example volumes of love and compassion for his “fellow man” in that he spent well over 30 years as an educator for special needs children with learning disabilities and often very challenging family support.
It is obvious that Dr. Flory obtained his deep sense of compassion and unyielding passion for helping those in need from his robust family environment, where saying “I love you” was the norm and substantial growth opportunities were a priority for a young man intended to serve the world.
In California also is Dr. Flory’s brother, sister-in-law and stunningly beautiful 4 nieces. Although not his own, it is through his energetic and extraordinarily authentic nieces that he has been humbled to the urgency of creating space in this world for the next generations to live happy and healthy lives. He is blessed with a brother, Tymothy, who although younger in age, maintains a place in Dr. Flory’s heart of utmost respect and awe, generally seen with respect to an elder sibling. His brother was deeply fortunate to find early in life a strong and steadfast wife, Kristin, who provides a steadfast foundation for their family’s health and growth.
